California Governor Gavin Newsom endorsed Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for reelection on Thursday, praising her efforts in reducing homelessness and violent crime in the city.
This endorsement comes just days before the primary election on Tuesday (June 2), where Bass faces a tight race against City Councilmember Nithya Raman and former reality TV star Spencer Pratt.
Newsom highlighted Bass’ achievements, stating, “The work Karen Bass is doing in Los Angeles is making our entire state stronger, with an 18% decline in homelessness while it grew nationally, historic drops in violent crime, boosting film production in L.A., and protecting our communities against ICE.” His support adds to a list of high-profile endorsements for Bass, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla.
A recent poll conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute for Governmental Studies, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times, shows Bass leading with 26% support among likely voters. However, her lead is statistically insignificant, with Raman at 25% and Pratt at 22%.
The primary race is highly competitive, with Bass’ leadership under scrutiny following challenges such as a major wildfire in Pacific Palisades and a significant city budget deficit. Despite these hurdles, Bass’ campaign emphasizes her achievements in reducing homelessness and crime, along with her leadership during immigration raids.
The election’s outcome remains uncertain, with many voters still undecided. If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff in November. As the primary approaches, the candidates continue to vie for support in a race that could see the first incumbent mayor unseated since 2005.
