Newsom Celebrates Redistricting Win in Texas, Eyes 2028

Fresh off a significant victory with California’s Proposition 50, Governor Gavin Newsom of California took his triumph to Texas, a state at the heart of the nation’s redistricting battle. On Saturday (November 8), Newsom addressed a crowd of around 800 Democrats at a union hall in Houston, celebrating the passage of the proposition, which aims to counteract Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s efforts to increase Republican congressional seats.

Newsom’s visit to Texas, where he was met with cheers of “2028,” highlights his potential presidential ambitions. During the rally, Newsom emphasized the power of voters, stating, “We can shape the future here in Texas,” and encouraged Democrats to continue their resistance against redistricting efforts that favor Republicans.

Proposition 50 allows California to redraw its congressional districts to add five more Democratic seats, countering the GOP’s gains in Texas. The measure passed with nearly 64% of the vote, a decisive win for Newsom. In contrast, Abbott’s redistricting plan, signed in August, aims to boost Republican representation by concentrating Democratic voters into fewer districts, a strategy known as “packing.”

The rally featured Democratic leaders from across Texas, including Harris County Commissioners Adrian Garcia and Rodney Ellis, and Congresswomen Lizzie Fletcher and Jasmine Crockett. Newsom’s plan is seen as a bold move to challenge Republican dominance and encourage other blue states to follow suit.

As Newsom looks ahead to a potential presidential run in 2028, he remains focused on reclaiming the House of Representatives for Democrats. “We cannot rest,” he declared, before heading to Brazil for a conference. Newsom’s efforts have sparked discussions about the future of redistricting and its impact on American politics.
