Newsom Accuses Trump of Misusing Federal Agents in LA

California Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a Freedom of Information Act request to investigate the deployment of federal agents by the Trump administration during his redistricting announcement in Los Angeles. Newsom claims that President Donald Trump has been misusing federal law enforcement and the National Guard across the city.

On Thursday, nearly 100 Customs and Border Protection agents appeared in Little Tokyo, coinciding with Newsom’s press conference on redistricting efforts. The Department of Homeland Security described the presence as routine patrols, but Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass labeled it a “stunt.” Newsom expressed concerns that the operation was intended to intimidate those supporting fair electoral processes. He remarked, “Right outside, at this exact moment, there are dozens and dozens of ICE agents,” as reported by ABC7.

According to Newsweek, Newsom criticized the operation as a “brazen act of intimidation” and pointed to the timing as no coincidence. The agents detained at least one individual, sparking outrage among Democratic lawmakers. Mayor Bass stated, “This is just completely unacceptable,” and accused the federal agents of causing disorder.

The operation occurred as California prepares to redraw congressional maps, aiming to counter Republican efforts in Texas. The proposed maps could potentially add five Democratic seats in the 2026 election. Newsom has called for a special election on November 4 to allow voters to decide on the new maps.

Federal officials, including Border Patrol Sector Commander Gregory Bovino, defended the operation as part of regular enforcement activities. Bovino stated, “Breaking the law is breaking the law,” emphasizing that the patrols aim to enhance safety in Los Angeles.
