A new poll shows that five Western European allied countries view President Donald Trump as a threat to peace and security in Europe following his heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The survey, which was conducted by YouGov and released on Thursday (March 6), showed that the majority of respondents from Britain, Germany, Spain, France and Italy all viewed Trump as a “very big threat” or a “fairly big threat” to “peace and security in Europe.” Trump was reportedly viewed as a “very big threat” by 49% and a “fairly big threat” by 29% of British respondents; a “very big threat” by 48% and a “fairly big threat” by 26% of German respondents; a “very big threat” by 44% and a “fairly big threat” by 31% of Spanish respondents; a “very big threat” by 38% and a “fairly big threat” by 31% of French respondents; and a “very big threat” by 29% and a “fairly big threat” by 29% of Italian respondents.
Domestically, Trump polled far more favorably, according to a recent Emerson College Polling survey that showed his approval rating was unchanged following his meeting with Zelensky, despite receiving more criticism for his handling of the war between Russia and Ukraine. The Emerson College survey showed that Trump retained a 48% approval rating since the February national poll conducted on February 19, though his disapproval rating increased by one point to 43%. Trump is, however, seeing less support for his handling of the war between Russia and Ukraine with a majority 44% of voters saying they disapprove, 41% saying they approve and 15% saying they’re neutral.
“Perception of Trump’s handling of the Russia-Ukraine war reveals a stark partisan divide: 73% of Republicans approve of the President’s handling of the war, while 76% of Democrats disapprove,” said Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said. “Independents are more divided, with 46% disapproving and 35% approving.”
Trump claimed that Zelensky was “gambling with World War III” during a back and forth exchange as the rare earth minerals deal the two world leaders were supposed to sign fell through when the Ukrainian president was asked to leave the White House. Trump later claimed Zelensky could come back “when he is ready for Peace” in a post shared on his Truth Social account.
“This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account Monday (March 3).
