Prosecutors in San Bernardino County have charged three family members with multiple felonies in a harrowing case of alleged child abuse. Tina Key, Kenneth Key, both 60, and their 23-year-old daughter, Kaitlynn Key, are accused of torturing six children in their guardianship care. The charges include six counts of torture and one count of child abuse likely to cause great bodily injury or death, according to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.
The investigation began after a tip to a child abuse hotline led authorities to the Key family. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Crimes Against Children Unit, along with Loma Linda University Medical Center Children’s Assessment Center, conducted an extensive investigation. Officials allege that the children, aged four to sixteen, suffered years of physical, emotional, and mental abuse. The alleged abuse included daily beatings, strangulation to the point of unconsciousness, and deprivation of food and water for days.
The defendants were arrested on Monday and are scheduled to be arraigned via video on Thursday at the Rancho Cucamonga Superior Courthouse. A special allegation of personal infliction of great bodily injury has also been filed against them.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
