A new and highly contagious strain of COVID-19, named NB.1.8.1, has been detected in California and other states, including Washington, Virginia, and New York. The strain was first confirmed in California on April 17. This development comes as federal officials announced changes in vaccine recommendations, stating that booster shots will no longer be supported for healthy children and pregnant women.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the decision on Tuesday (May 27), despite concerns from pediatricians and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA notes that the youngest infants and pregnant women are among the groups at highest risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19. According to KTLA, federal officials have also decided to limit future vaccine doses to individuals aged 65 and older or those with underlying health conditions.
