New Construction Methods Emerge in L.A.’s Fire Zones

In Los Angeles, innovative construction methods like 3D-printed houses and shipping-container accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are gaining traction, particularly in fire-prone areas. The traditional method of building homes with wood framing has remained largely unchanged for over a century, despite the potential benefits of faster, cheaper, and more reliable industrial methods. In contrast, countries like Sweden have embraced prefabrication, with 90% of single-family homes constructed this way, according to Ryan E. Smith, director of the School of Architecture at the University of Arizona.

In the U.S., prefabrication accounted for just 3% of single-family homes in 2023, as reported by the National Association of Homebuilders. However, the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires have prompted a shift towards alternative construction methods. With over 16,000 buildings needing to be rebuilt, prefabrication and other innovative techniques are becoming more mainstream. According to Yahoo News, about 200 homes destroyed in the 2023 Maui wildfires have already been rebuilt using prefabrication.

3D-printed houses, which use large-scale printers to layer materials like concrete, offer precise engineering and faster construction times. Companies like Emergent are using this technology to build affordable housing in fire-affected areas, as noted by WATE 6 On Your Side. Shipping-container homes, modified by companies like Ark Container Homes, provide durable and cost-effective solutions for temporary and permanent housing.

Prefab construction companies are seeing increased demand from fire zones, as residents and officials seek quicker rebuilding options. L.A. County Planning Director Amy Bodek supports prefab construction to help stabilize affected communities. As these new methods become more prevalent, they could play a significant role in addressing the region’s housing crisis and rebuilding efforts.
