New California Laws Effective July 1

Starting July 1, Californians will need to adhere to a series of new laws impacting various aspects of daily life. These laws, approved by the state legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom, aim to enhance consumer protection, public health, and access to the judicial system.

One significant change involves subscription services. Businesses must now offer cancellation options in the same manner as sign-ups, whether online or by phone. They must also provide annual reminders with pricing and cancellation details, and a simple “click to cancel” option, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Pet insurance policies will require greater transparency, mandating disclosures about premium increases due to a pet’s age or location changes. Policies must clearly state exclusions for preexisting conditions and detail waiting periods or required medical exams.

For students, middle and high schools issuing ID cards must now include the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number. This measure is part of a broader effort to address student mental health.

Minimum wage increases will also take effect in several cities and counties. For instance, Sonoma County will see a 28% increase to $23.15 per hour, while San Francisco and Berkeley will rise to $19.18, according to California’s official website.

In the judicial system, courtrooms must meet new technology standards to support virtual proceedings. This change aims to improve access to justice and accommodate remote hearings in juvenile and civil cases through 2027.

These laws reflect California’s ongoing commitment to consumer rights, public health, and equitable access to services. As these changes take effect, residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new regulations to ensure compliance and take advantage of the protections offered.
