Former Los Angeles City Councilman and state senator Nathaniel “Nate” Holden passed away on Wednesday at the age of 95. Holden, a prominent figure in Los Angeles politics, served as a state senator for four years starting in 1974 and then spent nearly two decades on the Los Angeles City Council from 1987 to 2003.
Holden was known for his strong advocacy for the South Los Angeles community. His dedication to public service and his ability to push for vital services for his constituents earned him a lasting legacy. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn announced his death on social media, calling him “a legend here in Los Angeles” and “a lion in the State Senate.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also paid tribute to Holden, stating, “Nate Holden leaves behind a legacy of service and strength. Throughout his life, he put the South Los Angeles community front and center.”
The city will honor Holden by flying flags at half-staff.
A performing arts center in the Mid-City area bears his name, further cementing his impact on the community. Holden’s legacy of service and commitment to his constituents will be remembered by many who worked alongside him and those who benefited from his efforts.
