An unsolved murder at the upscale Ashton Sherman Village Apartments in Valley Village, has left residents alarmed and frustrated with building management. The victim, 53-year-old Menashe “Manny” Hidra, was found dead in his apartment on April 26, three days after neighbors reported hearing loud noises and screams coming from his unit. Residents claim that management has not addressed ongoing security issues that predate the crime.
According to KTLA, a resident called both security and police at around 3 a.m. on April 23 after hearing the disturbance. The LAPD has identified a potential suspect, described as a Hispanic male between 30 and 40 years old, seen on security footage attempting to enter several apartments before the murder.
Residents believe the suspect entered an empty fifth-floor apartment and climbed to the victim’s balcony. Photos show bloodstains between the balconies and on a door handle leading to an exit stairwell, suggesting the killer’s escape route. Despite these alarming details, building management has reportedly only referred to the murder as an “incident” in communications with tenants.
Residents have long complained about unsecured entrances, broken security fobs, and transients living on the roof. In response to the murder, management announced a 24/7 “courtesy patrol,” but many tenants feel this is insufficient. The LAPD urges anyone with information to contact their Valley Bureau at (818) 644-8080 or the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
