Eleven people were injured in a stabbing incident at the Union Gospel Mission, a men’s homeless shelter in Salem, Oregon, on Sunday evening (June 1). According to police, the attack occurred around 7:15 p.m., and the suspect is currently in custody. The victims were transported to the hospital with varying types of injuries, though their conditions remain unknown.
Angela Hedrick, a spokesperson for the Salem Police Department, stated that the incident is under investigation, and further details have not been released. The Executive Director of the Union Gospel Mission, Craig Smith, explained that the attacker was new to the shelter, having spent the previous night there. He was about to check in for a second night when a fight broke out. “Something … set him off, and he evidently had a knife in his bag,” Smith told NBC News.
The altercation occurred just before the man would have handed over his belongings to the staff, resulting in at least one staff member being injured. The Union Gospel Mission provides refuge to up to 150 homeless men each night.
