Mudslides Trap Drivers, Damage Homes In US

Flooding and mudslides in souther California resulted in drivers being trapped on buried roads and homes being damaged, authorities confirmed via ABC News.

San Bernardino County Fire said the mudslides affected Forest Falls, Oak Glen and Potato Canyon in a statement shared on its social media accounts. A group of around 10 people traveling in at least six different vehicles was trapped on state Route 38 by Jenks Lake near the San Bernardino National Forest, according to the department.

“San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, in unified command with CAL FIRE, continues to respond to the September Incident affecting the communities of Forest Falls, Oak Glen, and Potato Canyon,” the department wrote on its X account. “Crews remain active in the area as mud and debris flows have left several roads impassable and impacted multiple homes. Valley of the Falls Drive is currently blocked at Highway 38, with additional road blockages between Highway 38 and the top of Forest Falls.

“San Bernardino County Fire’s Damage Assessment Teams will be in the field at first light tomorrow to evaluate structures and determine the extent of property loss.”

The route remained closed as of Friday (September 19) morning, the California Highway Patrol confirmed. No injuries or missing people were reported in the mudslides, which were caused by heavy rain, with the National Weather Service issuing a flash flood warning for the area.

“San Bernardino County Fire is planning for a full operational period tomorrow, with priorities focused on completing damage assessments, supporting affected residents, and addressing critical infrastructure needs in partnership with CAL FIRE, Caltrans, and other allied agencies,” the fire department said.
