Motel Must Pay $2 Million After Guest Dies From 150-Degree Shower

A motel in Kentucky was ordered to pay $2 million to the family of a 76-year-old guest who died because the shower was too hot. On November 18, 2021, Alex Chronis and two co-workers checked into a room at the Econo Lodge in Erlanger, Kentucky.

The next morning, Chronis went to take a shower and was knocked down by the intense heat of the water, which was around 150 degrees. As Chronis lay in the tub, the hot water continued to pour over him, leaving him with third-degree burns.

Chronis spent several months in the hospital undergoing painful skin graft surgeries. Unfortunately, he died from his injuries on June 19, 2022.

After his death, Chronis’ niece filed a lawsuit against the motel on behalf of his estate. The court ruled in favor of the family, awarding them $1,271,486.60 for medical expenses, $16,058.73 for funeral expenses, $250,000 for pain and suffering, and $500,000 for punitive damages.
