More than a foot of snow was already reported in New York City early Monday morning, prompting the first blizzard warning in the country’s largest city in nine years. Blizzard warnings are also in effect across the New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston, Rhode Island and parts of Maine.

Winds are expected to be as high as 55 MPH in New York City and 75 MPH in Boston, while wind gusts have already reached 84 MPH on Long Island and 73 MPH on Cape Cod.

Heavy snow and winds in New York City and New Jersey are expected to be strongest Monday morning before weakening in the afternoon, while snow is expected to continue in Rhode Island, Boston and Maine throughout the day before reducing around evening time. Winds are, however, expected to remain strong after snow lightens up and reduce visibility.

An estimated 1 to 2 feet of snow is expected across the majority of the Northeast region with New York City and Boston forecast to see 20 inches; Long Island potentially getting two feet; and New Jersey and Philadelphia anticipated to get 11 to 15 inches.
