NBC News projects that Congressman Barry Moore has won the Republican primary runoff in the Alabama Senate race. Backed by President Donald Trump, Moore defeated former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson to secure the GOP nomination. The Senate seat became available after Senator Tommy Tuberville announced his candidacy for governor last year.
Moore, a three-term congressman and member of the House Freedom Caucus, led the initial primary with nearly 40% of the vote, while Hudson secured 25% to earn a spot in the runoff. Trump’s endorsement played a significant role in Moore’s campaign, with the former president calling him “the best America First candidate you can imagine.” Moore emphasized his conservative record and alignment with Trump’s policies throughout his campaign.
Hudson, running as an outsider, challenged Moore’s Washington ties and promised to be a “warrior for President Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda.” Despite his efforts, Moore’s established political presence and Trump’s support helped him clinch the nomination.
The Alabama Senate race is one of several contests testing Trump’s influence in Republican primaries. Trump’s endorsements have largely succeeded this year, although not without challenges. As Moore prepares for the general election, he will face the Democratic nominee, who will be decided in a separate runoff between attorney Everett Wess and business owner Dakarai Larriett.
The general election will determine who will succeed Tuberville in the Senate. Meanwhile, Alabama’s political landscape continues to evolve, with competitive races for attorney general and lieutenant governor also on the ballot.
