Two young siblings from Ohio, aged 8 and 9, who went missing in October, have been found safe in a remote Icelandic village. The children were reported missing to Canton, Ohio, police on October 25 by a family member. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the children’s mother allegedly stopped taking her mental health medication and abandoned her apartment, leading to the children’s disappearance.
Investigators initially traced the family to Denver, Colorado, before discovering that they had traveled to London, England. From there, the mother took the children to the island of Jersey in the English Channel and eventually to a remote fishing village in Iceland. The exact location of the village has not been disclosed, but Icelandic authorities found the children at a motel in Reykjavik.
The children are currently safe and under the care of Icelandic social services, awaiting transfer to trusted family members. The mother has been hospitalized and will return to the United States after her recovery. It is unclear if she will face any charges.
“The collaboration of effort in this case can’t be overstated. The ability to respond and recover these children abroad is an extremely difficult task. Our investigators did an outstanding job. We are lucky to have such strong and dedicated law enforcement partners and credit should be given to them for helping bring these children home,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said in a statement.
