Brook Cheuvront, a 20-year-old student from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, was found dead on Sunday (September 22) after going missing during a hike on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Cheuvront, a Morehead-Cain scholar and the 2022 valedictorian at Avery County High School, was reported missing on Saturday when a tracking app she was using stopped updating, and her friends could not reach her.
South African National Parks (SANParks) initiated a search operation on Saturday, but it was not until Sunday that a helicopter was able to locate Cheuvront’s body on the slopes of the mountain in an area known as Devil’s Peak. The cause of Cheuvront’s death is still unclear, and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine her cause of death.
Cheuvront was in South Africa as part of an internship associated with her Morehead-Cain Scholarship through Justice Desk Africa. She had been in the country for over a month before her death, documenting her experiences on social media.
The circumstances surrounding Cheuvront’s death remain under investigation by South African authorities.
