Millions of Americans are participating in ‘No Kings’ protests across the country, opposing President Donald Trump‘s administration. These protests, taking place on Saturday (June 14), coincide with a military parade in Washington, D.C., celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army and President Trump’s seventy-ninth birthday. Organizers have planned over 2,000 protests nationwide, aiming to highlight resistance to what they see as authoritarianism and the militarization of democracy.
Protests have emerged in cities like Los Angeles, where the National Guard and Marines have been deployed in response to immigration enforcement raids. In Florida, marchers approached Mar-a-Lago, while in Los Angeles, protesters unveiled a 20-foot balloon depicting Trump in a diaper. Demonstrations in cities such as New York, Seattle, and Chicago have also drawn large crowds.
The protests are organized by groups like the ACLU and Indivisible, aiming to stand up for democracy and against the Trump administration’s policies. Despite tensions, organizers emphasize the importance of peaceful protests and have advised participants to deescalate and empathize during confrontations.
The ‘No Kings’ movement seeks to reject “authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of our democracy.” Organizers estimate that the protests could exceed the turnout of the Hands Off mobilization in April, which saw 3.5 million participants.
In Minnesota, protests were canceled after a politically motivated shooting targeted local lawmakers.
In addition to the protests, a military parade in Washington, D.C., features over 6,000 soldiers, battle tanks, and military aircraft. The parade is estimated to cost between $25 and $45 million, a figure that many Americans view as an unnecessary expense.
