Mike Krzyzewski’s Grandson Charged In Crash That Killed Teen

Joseph Savarino, the grandson of legendary former Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, was arrested in connection with a crash that killed a 15-year-old Saturday (April 18) night, ESPN reports.

Savarino, 26, was charged with misdemeanor driving while impaired after striking the teen, who was riding his bike in northwest Durham at the time of the crash. Savarino was reported to have been administered a Breathalyzer test and his blood-alcohol concentration was measured at 0.11%, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08%.

Savarino made his first court appearance Monday (April 20), which resulted in a judge revoking his driver’s license before releasing him on a $100,000 secured bond posted his mother, Debbie Savarino, the daughter of Krzyzewski, who works as an assistant athletic director at Duke University. Joseph’s brother, Michael Savarino, had previously pleaded guilty to DWI in July 2022 in connection with his November 2021 arrest.

Michael, who was 20 at the time of his arrest and had appeared in 13 games for Duke as a walk-on, was sentenced to 12 months probation and completed a treatment program and community service and paid a fine as part of a plea deal. Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero, who played at Duke at the time, was the owner of the vehicle being driven by Michael and was initially charged with aiding and abetting DWI, which was later dropped.
