Former First Lady Melania Trump revealed that she’s a staunch supporter of abortion rights in the latest excerpt from her upcoming memoir, Melania, set to be released on October 8.
“It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government,” she wrote, according to the Guardian, which received an advanced copy of her memoir.
The former first lady’s defense of abortion rights is a rebuttal of the Republican party’s historically anti-abortion stance. The excerpt, however, coincided with her husband, former President Donald Trump, claiming he would veto a federal abortion ban if passed by Congress on Wednesday (October 2).
The Supreme Court voted 6-3 to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling to guarantee a constitutional right to an abortion in June 2022, which included Justices Neil N. Gorsuch, Brett M. Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, all of whom were appointed by Trump during his presidency, voting in favor of the decision.
“Many women opt for abortions due to personal medical concerns,” Melania Trump wrote in her upcoming memoir. “These situations with significant moral implications weigh heavily on the woman and her family and deserve our empathy. Consider, for example, the complexity inherent in the decision of whether the mother should risk her own life to give birth.”
