Conservative commentator and author Steve Hilton has announced his candidacy for the 2026 California gubernatorial race. Hilton, known for his book “Califailure” and his previous role as a Fox News contributor, aims to “Make California Golden Again.” He is running as a Republican, despite the party’s long absence from the governor’s office since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s victory in 2006.
Hilton, who became a U.S. citizen in 2021, was raised in the United Kingdom and previously served as an advisor to former UK Prime Minister David Cameron. He has been a California resident for about 14 years and hosted “The Next Revolution” on Fox News from 2017 to 2023. In his campaign announcement, Hilton emphasized the need for balance and practical policies after 15 years of what he described as “Democrat one-party rule” in California.
Hilton expressed his concern about the state’s current trajectory, stating, “If we continue with this one-party rule by the Democrats, things are just gonna really start to deteriorate very rapidly.” He also highlighted issues such as high housing costs and taxes as challenges facing California.
Hilton is not the only Republican in the race; Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is also running. The race could gain further attention if Vice President Kamala Harris decides to enter. Hilton remarked that Harris would be a “great opponent” due to her national reach.
