Measles Infected Person Who Passed Through LAX Visited Local Businesses

Health officials in Los Angeles County have issued a warning after a resident, recently arrived from Taiwan, was diagnosed with measles. The individual landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on March 5, traveling on China Airlines Flight 8 from Taipei. They were present in the Tom Bradley International Terminal from 7 p.m. to 10:40 p.m. that night, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

After arriving, the person visited Cloud 9 Nails in North Hollywood on March 7 and the Superior Grocery Store in El Monte on March 10. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has advised that individuals who were at these locations during the specified times may be at risk of contracting measles. Health officials recommend that exposed individuals confirm their vaccination status. Symptoms of measles, such as high fever, cough, and rash, typically develop one to three weeks after exposure.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is assisting with notifying passengers who may have been exposed on the flight. Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air and via droplets. The virus can remain airborne and on surfaces for hours after an infected person has left the area.

This case is part of a larger measles outbreak in the United States, with 222 cases reported across 12 states as of March 6. The outbreak has resulted in at least one death. Health officials emphasize the importance of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is highly effective in preventing measles.

For more information on vaccination, individuals are encouraged to consult with their healthcare providers or visit clinics offering no-cost or low-cost immunizations in Los Angeles County.
