Matthew Rooney, the grandson of Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr., died at the age of 51 at his Hamptons home last Friday (August 15), the team confirmed to the New York Post on Thursday (August 21).
“The Rooney Family is mourning the loss of Matthew,” a Steelers spokesperson said in a statement to the newspaper.
Rooney’s cause of death wasn’t publicly revealed as of Thursday. The Pennsylvania native was the son of JoAnn Wallace Rooney and John J. Rooney, who had previously served as a 16% minority owner until sharing his stake in 2009.
Matthew earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University and a Master’s at Columbia University and was a writer, artist and lvoer of ballet and opera, his family confirmed in his obituary shared by R.L. Williams, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc.
“Matthew’s wit, charm and love of fashion made him one of life’s last true Dandies and an authentic Bon Vivant,” the obituary states.
A funeral mass is scheduled for Thursday morning, followed by a private burial. The late Art Rooney Sr. founded the Steelers in 1933 and was the owner during the franchise’s first four of an NFL record six Super Bowl championships, which is tied with the New England Patriots.
Art Rooney Sr. was succeeded by his late son Dan Rooney from 1988 to 2016, who was later succeeded by his son, Art Rooney II, the current majority owner of the franchise.
