A massive recall issued in December for products that could result in serious illness “due to adulteration from pests, including rodents, birds and insects” was given a Class II classification earlier this month by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to a notice shared by the agency and obtained by PEOPLE.
Gold Star Distribution, Inc., initially shared the recall on December 26, 2025, which stemmed from a Minneapolis-based facility operating under “insanitary conditions, including the presence of rodent excreta, rodent urine, and bird droppings,” with the possibility of products being infected if they were in contact with surfaces with airborne particles of animal waste. A Class II recall is defined by the FDA as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” on its website.
The products affected, which include candies such as Jolly Ranchers, Skittles and Sour Patch Kids; cereal such as Cheerios and Kellogg’s Rice Krispies; various drinks such as Gatorade, Coca-Cola, Smart Water and Arizona Ice Teas; and various others were sold in stores located in Indiana, Minnesota and North Dakota.
