Five people were injured after a gunman opened fire at a Connecticut mall on Tuesday (May 27), WTNH reported.
An argument escalated into a violent outburst resulting in gunshots at the Brass Mill Center in Waterbury just prior to 4:40 p.m. local time. Five people were struck and hospitalized for injuries, according to Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski, Jr.
Police confirmed that a verbal argument led to a violent confrontation, emphasizing that the incident wasn’t a “random act of violence” during a press conference updating the situation. The shooter was described to be a man in his 20s and the weapon was reported to be a semi-automatic pistol, according to NBC Connecticut.
A person of interest was reported to be in police custody as of late Tuesday night. Videos that appear to have been recorded inside the mall and shared online showed a gunshot victim screaming with apparent injuries.
“I can’t move! I can’t move! Somebody help me!” the apparent victim said.
No fatalities were reported and all five victims’ injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening, according to NBC Connecticut.
Many people were reported to be shopping at the popular 1.1-million square-foot mall when shots were fired, according to officials.
“This afternoon there was a tragic mass shooting at the Bass Mill Center in Waterbury, a place where everyone should feel safe. We are grateful to law enforcement, who acted swiftly,” Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont wrote on his X account Tuesday.
