Marines’ 250th Anniversary Event Won’t Close 5 Freeway

The U.S. Marine Corps will commemorate its 250th anniversary with a live-fire beach assault demonstration at Camp Pendleton on Saturday. Marine officials have confirmed that this event will not result in the closure of the 5 Freeway in Orange and San Diego counties, despite initial concerns. The event, titled “America’s Marines 250: From Sea to Shore – A Review of Amphibious Strength,” will take place off Red Beach, located on the coastal side of the freeway.

The celebration will feature amphibious vehicles, aircraft, and Navy ships, showcasing the Marine Corps’ capabilities. Vice President JD Vance, a former Marine, will lead the event, which will also include remarks from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Navy Secretary John C. Phelan, and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith. The event is expected to draw over 15,000 attendees, including Marines, Navy sailors, veterans, and their families.

According to Fox LA, the demonstration aims to pay tribute to the Marine Corps’ history, from the beaches of Iwo Jima to recent global operations. Despite Governor Gavin Newsom’s concerns about safety and traffic, the Marines have assured that the event will adhere to safety protocols and not disrupt public transportation routes.

The White House will capture the demonstration for a national primetime broadcast on November 9. The event highlights the Marine Corps’ evolution as a global force in readiness and its commitment to amphibious warfare.
