Many Choosing to Sell, Not Rebuild, After Palisades Wildfire

In the wake of last year’s devastating wildfire in Pacific Palisades, nearly 300 residents have opted to sell their properties instead of rebuilding. According to Westside Current, 273 properties are currently listed for sale, many with price tags over $1 million, despite being empty lots. In less affected areas like Ridgeview Country Estates, homes are selling for over $10 million.

The slow pace of rebuilding highlights the financial and logistical challenges faced by wildfire survivors. Fewer than 100 homeowners have begun the rebuilding process, with only one permit issued in county areas and 23 within city limits. To aid those willing to rebuild, Mayor Karen Bass signed an executive order in April waiving permit fees and established a One-Stop Rebuilding Center to assist homeowners.

Access to the area remains restricted, with many roads closed, including the main access point, Pacific Coast Highway. This has forced potential buyers to consider purchasing properties without seeing them in person. As the community grapples with the aftermath, the decision to sell or rebuild remains a difficult choice for many residents.
