A Florida man who once spent eight months in a coma was killed after he was struck by a pickup truck while walking along the road early Friday (July 26) morning. Drew Kohn, who was just days away from his 30th birthday, was declared dead at the scene.
“At that time, it was dark, and the pedestrian was not wearing reflective clothing,” the sheriff’s office told PEOPLE. “Unfortunately, the driver of the pickup truck did not see the pedestrian and struck him on the outside lane.”
The driver immediately called 911 and is cooperating with the investigation.
Kohn previously survived a brush with death after a motorcycle accident in 2017. Kohn was riding his motorcycle when he was struck by a car and knocked unconscious. Doctors believed he was brain dead and wanted to remove him from life support and harvest his organs.
However, his mother, Yolanda Osborne-Kohn, refused to let doctors end her son’s life, and after 244 days, he woke up. His first words were: “I love you, Mom.”
“It was because of my faith that gave me the boldness to speak up, push back, and let them know, ‘You’re not getting a toenail or an eyelash,'” Osborne-Kohn told WTLV.
Despite losing her son, Osborne-Kohn said she is not upset and cherished the last few years she got to spend with Drew.
“God honored my request, and I’m not mad. I’m not angry. I’m at peace. I got seven years, and like Hezekiah who turned his face to the wall, I remember sitting on Drew’s hospital bed and saying to myself, ‘Thy will be done,” Osborne-Kohn told the news station. “Drew loved God, and because of God’s nature when he answered my request, there are no words I have of malicious intent towards my creator. He gave me a gift and turned around and gave me seven-plus years.”
