A man walking his dog along the Potomac River in Northern Virginia discovered what appears to be airplane debris, including a seat and a tray table. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is now examining the items, which are believed to be from a mid-air collision in January near Reagan National Airport. This tragic accident involved an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter, resulting in the deaths of 67 people.
Andrew Guevara, a local resident, spotted the debris and immediately reported it to authorities. “It kind of caught my eye, so I kept on looking at it,” Guevara told ABC News. He recognized the seat’s features, such as the tray table lock mechanism and the headrest’s curvature, which led him to suspect its origin.
The Alexandria, Virginia, Police Department confirmed that they responded to the report and that the debris was taken by the D.C. Harbor Patrol. The D.C. police are now working with the NTSB to transfer the wreckage for further investigation. The NTSB stated, “We are taking possession of the item and will evaluate it and store it until it can be transferred to the remainder of the wreckage from the DCA midair accident.”
Guevara expressed his desire to ensure the debris was properly handled, saying, “It’s part of, not only an investigation, but it’s part of the unfortunate events that happened back in January.”
The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand more about the collision and its aftermath.
