A Washington state man is facing multiple charges after he fatally shot a teenager in the parking lot of a shopping center in Renton on June 5. The King County, Washington, Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said that 51-year-old Aaron Brown Myers confronted 17-year-old Hazrat Ali Rohani and his friends, who were walking through the parking lot with airsoft guns.
Myers told the police that he ordered the teens to put their hands up, but they ignored his command. He then claimed that one of the teens was “going to kill him,” so he opened fire, striking Rohani six times in the back and one time in the side.
Police said that an investigation revealed that Myers’ story wasn’t entirely true. Surveillance camera footage contradicted what Myers told the police. The video showed that the teens complied with Myers’ commands, with one putting down the airsoft gun on the sidewalk before putting up his hands.
At one point, Myers shoved one of the teens to the ground and stood over him while pointing his gun at Rohani. When Rohani turned away, Myers started shooting.
The two surviving teens told the police they were bringing the airsoft guns back to the store because one of them wasn’t working properly. They said they told Myers they weren’t real guns, but he didn’t believe them.
Myers was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and assault. His bail was set at $2 million.
