A woman and her daughter were fatally shot outside of a courthouse in Kentucky on Monday (August 19). The Elizabethtown Police Department said that the gunman, Christopher Elder, 46, ambushed them as they were heading to a hearing for an emergency protective order.
Erica Riley, 37, who was dating Elder, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her mother, 71-year-old Janet Rylee, was rushed to the hospital, where she died.
Elder also shot a third person, who was related to the other two victims. He was taken to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Elder then fled the scene in a vehicle, leading police on a chase before getting into a standoff with officers. He eventually shot himself and was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Officials said the shooting was an isolated domestic incident.
“It’s terribly tragic,” Elizabethtown Police Chief Jeremy Thompson said. “It underlines the importance of what family court has to go through. There’s always emotion involved. It only takes one incident like this to understand how volatile it can be.”
