A 30-year-old man from Parsippany, New Jersey, drowned on Tuesday (September 2) while attempting to swim across the Delaware River near the Kittatinny Point picnic area in Pennsylvania. The incident occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m., according to the National Park Service (NPS).
The man was swimming with family members when he became tired and went under the water, which was about 17 feet deep. Emergency responders, including NPS rangers, New Jersey State Police, and water rescue teams from the Portland Volunteer Fire Department, quickly located and recovered his body. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s identity has not been disclosed, and the exact swimming conditions at the time remain unclear. The NPS has reminded all river users to wear a properly-fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when engaging in activities such as swimming, floating, fishing, or boating on the Delaware River.
This tragic event marks the second drowning in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area this year. In July, a 54-year-old Pennsylvania man died after his kayak capsized downstream from the park’s Bushkill Access.
