A man was crushed to death in Santa Ana while attempting to dig a tunnel beneath a bridge.
Authorities reported that the victim, who was believed to be living under the bridge, was found by a friend who called 911.
The Orange County Fire Authority received a call around 8:30 a.m. regarding a confined space rescue on the 2100 block of West 17th Street. However, the operation soon transitioned to a body recovery mission. According to KTLA, OCFA Captain Barta stated that the man was not part of any construction crew and was digging when concrete and debris suddenly collapsed on him.
An Urban Search and Rescue team was dispatched to the scene to recover the body, which was then handed over to the Orange County Coroner’s Department. The identity of the victim has not been released, and authorities are still investigating the reasons behind his attempt to dig the tunnel.
