A North Carolina man, Wellington Delano Dickens III, was charged with murder after authorities discovered the bodies of his four children in the trunk of a car at his home in Zebulon, east of Raleigh. On Monday (October 27), Dickens, 38, called 911 and admitted to killing his children, leading deputies from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office to his residence on Springtooth Drive.
Upon arrival, deputies found the remains of three of Dickens’ biological children, aged 6, 9, and 10, along with his 18-year-old stepchild, inside the trunk of a car parked in the garage. According to the sheriff’s office, the bodies had been there for an extended period. Dickens’ 3-year-old son was found unharmed inside the house.
The state medical examiner is working to confirm the identities of the deceased children, as the bodies had been in the trunk for a long time. Dickens was arrested and charged with four counts of murder. He is currently held in the Johnston County Jail without bond, and a court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities are investigating the timeline of events, including whether the children had been reported missing. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case. According to court records, Dickens’ wife, Stephanie, died in April 2024, leaving him to care for their five children. Her death followed the passing of Dickens’ father in a car accident in Lee County, North Carolina, the previous year.
