Man Appears In Court After Rose Bowl Concert Assault

Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala, a 23-year-old from Hawthorne, appeared in court on Monday after being arrested for an assault at a Rüfüs Du Sol concert in Pasadena. The incident occurred on August 16 at the Rose Bowl, where Zavala allegedly attacked three people following a dispute over a spilled drink.

According to the Pasadena Police Department, Zavala became agitated after a drink was accidentally spilled on him, leading to the altercation. Video footage of the assault, which went viral, showed Zavala throwing punches at concertgoers. One victim, who traveled from Arizona, reported being knocked unconscious and suffering significant bleeding. The video and public tips helped authorities identify and arrest Zavala on August 21.

In court, the judge ruled Zavala was not a public threat, releasing him on his own recognizance with an ankle monitor. Zavala is scheduled to return to court on October 21. The case has been sent to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review before formal charges are filed.

The incident has sparked criticism of the Rose Bowl’s security measures during the sold-out event, which hosted nearly 90,000 attendees. Concerns were raised about crowd management, aggressive behavior, and drug use at the venue. Rüfüs Du Sol expressed their dismay, stating that such violence is “completely unacceptable.”
