CLAREMONT (CNS) – A Pomona man was in custody Friday after allegedly shooting at a drone near a wilderness park in Claremont and leading police on a 20-mile pursuit that ended on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway.
Claremont police were notified at 7:38 p.m. Thursday that a person was shooting at a drone near the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, at 4031 N. Mills Ave., according to Lt. Jason Walters. More callers provided descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle at Mills Avenue and Foothill Boulevard but he failed to yield and led officers on a 20-mile pursuit through Claremont, Pomona, La Verne and Montclair while firing shots at officers from his vehicle, Walters said. None of the officers or their vehicles was struck by the gunfire.
While eastbound on the San Bernardino Freeway near Indian Hill Boulevard, an officer used a Precision Immobilization Technique — or PIT maneuver — on the suspect’s vehicle, disabling it, the lieutenant said. The man surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Investigating officers found a loaded firearm and additional loaded magazines at the scene, Walters said.
Forty-six-year-old Daniel Rombach was booked into jail in Claremont for suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon, felony evading and unlawful possession of a firearm and held on $2 million bail, Walters said.
