A man in Las Vegas has been accused of setting another man on fire in a walk-in freezer after allegedly smoking methamphetamine. On April 13, police responded to a structure fire in the 2200 block of Kenneth Road, where two individuals sustained burns. According to KLAS, officers arrested Sergio Salazar, who was involved in the incident, on a bench warrant issued from North Las Vegas Municipal Court.
The victim, who was found severely burned and naked, was taken to a local hospital and intubated. At the time of the report, it was unclear if he would survive. Salazar, who sustained minor burns, claimed the victim threatened his family and burned him. However, he later admitted to police that the victim never made verbal threats or advanced toward him.
Salazar lived in a non-functional walk-in freezer in his mother’s backyard and had invited the victim, aged 19 to 21, to stay for shelter, food, and clothes. The two began smoking meth using a makeshift stove. Salazar told police he became paranoid, thinking the victim was “up to something,” and accidentally hit the stove, causing burning alcohol to spill onto the victim.
Salazar now faces charges of attempted murder and first-degree arson, both felonies. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 1.
