Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo, 36, was taken into custody in Peru on Wednesday in connection with the murder of his wife, Sheylla Cabrera. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Cabrera surrendered at the Interpol Lima headquarters. He is being held in preventive detention while awaiting extradition to the United States.
Sheylla Cabrera, 33, was found dead on August 16 in the Angeles National Forest. Her body was discovered over the side of an embankment, but the cause of death has not yet been revealed. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Jossimar Cabrera is charged with one count of murder, with allegations of using a knife as a deadly weapon. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in state prison.
Cabrera allegedly killed his wife on August 10 at their Lancaster apartment, then fled to Peru with their three children. The children were found safe in Peru and taken into protective custody on the same day Sheylla’s body was discovered. Footage reportedly shows Jossimar dragging a large object from the apartment complex where the family lived.
The case has drawn attention due to conflicting accounts Jossimar provided about Sheylla’s disappearance. Her family claims he initially said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had taken her, then claimed she left him for another man, and later said she had an accident. Sheylla’s mother, Helga Rocillo, stated that her daughter had planned to file a criminal report against Jossimar due to alleged abuse.
The extradition process is expected to take several months, but Cabrera will remain in Peruvian custody in the meantime.
