An Oklahoma man is accused of fatally shooting an elderly woman blocks away from his home while doing target practice in his backyard, according to court filings obtained by ABC News.
Cody Wayne Adams, 33, was charged with first-degree manslaughter in connection with the incident, which took place on Christmas Day (December 25), according to a probable cause affidavit. The woman was reportedly seated on a love seat holding a baby in her left arm when she was struck in her upper right arm, with the bullet then entering her chest cavity.
Authorities didn’t release the victim’s name or age but described her as an “elderly female” in a news release. The woman’s relatives said they heard someone shooting five to seven rounds for several minutes north of the home, with the victim having “commented that someone got a new gun for Christmas” just prior to being shot, at which point she “said ‘ouch’ and collapsed,” the affidavit states.
Authorities canvassed several homes and confirmed that all but Adams’ home had “suitable shooting backstops or firing locations,” while also receiving information that Adams received a Glock .45-caliber handgun for Christmas, with his neighbors claiming he shot “about 20 rounds” Thursday afternoon, according to the affidavit. Adams told responding deputies that he had been shooting a Glock .45 handgun he purchased himself at a Red Bull can in his backyard and “became visibly upset and began to cry” when a deputy said he suspected the shooting may have caused the victim’s death.
The deputy also reportedly notified Adams that “while he was shooting towards the ground in his backyard that there was nothing behind his property to stop any bullets from traveling beyond his property and hurting someone,” according to the affidavit. Adams was arrested on Thursday and a charging document alleges he caused the woman’s death “by engaging in conduct with a firearm that created a situation of unreasonable risk and probability of death, or great bodily harm, to another person and demonstrated a conscious disregard for the safety of others.”
Adams’ bond was set at $100,000 and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 26.
