The Madre Fire, which ignited on Wednesday afternoon, has rapidly become California’s largest wildfire of 2025. The blaze has already consumed over 54 square miles, or 35,531 acres, within just 13 hours, according to Cal Fire. The fire is currently only 5% contained, posing a significant challenge for firefighters battling the flames.

The fire started near Highway 166, approximately halfway between Santa Maria and Cuyama, and has forced evacuations in parts of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

Highway 166 remains closed from Highway 101 to Perkins Road near New Cuyama, with no estimated time for reopening. The fire has also led to the closure of other local roads, affecting travel in the region.

The National Weather Service reports that the area near the fire is experiencing temperatures of 95 degrees, with 20% humidity and winds gusting up to 15 mph. These conditions are contributing to the fire’s rapid spread.

As the situation develops, fire officials are urging travelers to avoid the affected areas and for residents to stay informed through local emergency services. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
