‘Luigi: The Musical’ Sells Out in San Francisco

“Luigi: The Musical,” a satirical stage production about the alleged CEO-killer Luigi Mangione, is set to premiere in San Francisco on Friday. The musical imagines Mangione sharing a prison cell with real-life figures Sam Bankman-Fried and Sean “Diddy” Combs, exploring themes of societal disillusionment with institutions like healthcare, tech, and Hollywood. All five scheduled performances at the Taylor Street Theater have sold out, with plans for additional shows in the future.

The musical, produced by Caleb Zeringue and directed by Nova Bradford, uses humor and satire to critique the men and the institutions they represent. The creators emphasize that the show is not a celebration of violence or a judgment on the ongoing legal matters involving Mangione, who is facing charges related to the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, was arrested in Pennsylvania shortly after Thompson’s death and has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in New York and federal courts.

The musical’s creators hope to provoke thought and laughter, questioning why figures like Mangione become folk heroes and what this reveals about American society. According to KTVU, the show is a “wildly irreverent, razor-sharp comedy” that mirrors the current societal moment.

The production has sparked controversy, with some critics questioning its approach to sensitive topics. However, the creative team maintains that their goal is to explore cultural questions with humor and heart, rather than make moral proclamations. As reported by Common Dreams, the show is not intended to glorify violence or trivialize the actions of the characters.

Mangione’s next court date is scheduled for December 5, 2025, when a trial date may be set.
