Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, waived extradition on Thursday (December 19) in Pennsylvania, allowing his transfer to New York City. Mangione, 26, faces charges of first-degree murder and terrorism in New York, where he is expected to be arraigned.
New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg stated that Mangione’s actions were intended to “sow terror.”
Mangione will be held at Rikers Island in isolation due to his high-profile status.
He was arrested on December 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized at a McDonald’s.
Mangione appeared calm during his court appearance in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, where he also faces charges of gun possession, forgery, and false identification.
Mangione allegedly used a “ghost gun” and had a manifesto criticizing the healthcare industry. His mother had reported him missing in November, and authorities identified him from surveillance footage.
Mangione is expected to face federal charges as well.
