Shannon O’Connor, known as the Los Gatos “party mom,” was sentenced to 35 years and 10 months in prison on Thursday for hosting alcohol-fueled parties where she pressured teenagers to engage in sexual activities.
The sentencing took place in Santa Clara County Superior Court, concluding a judicial process that lasted nearly five years.
O’Connor, 52, was convicted in March of 48 charges, including sexual penetration of an intoxicated victim and providing alcohol to minors. Her actions, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, left lasting trauma on more than a dozen children, as victims and their families recounted during the sentencing hearing. According to Los Angeles Times, Judge Elizabeth Peterson described O’Connor’s behavior as “insidious,” stating that she groomed and manipulated her son’s friends.
O’Connor provided alcohol to teens, encouraged sexual encounters, and attempted to dissuade witnesses from reporting the crimes. Prosecutors argued that she orchestrated these parties to boost her son’s social life. Despite her attorney’s request for a lighter sentence, Deputy District Attorney Joanna Lee called for the maximum term, emphasizing the children’s vulnerability. Lee stated, “This is not the work of a normal person…this is the work of a sexual predator.”
O’Connor, who has been in custody since her arrest in Idaho in 2021, addressed the court, expressing regret but denying any sexual inclinations toward minors. Her statement was met with skepticism from the victims’ families, who shared their experiences of betrayal and lasting damage.
The sentencing marks the end of a high-profile case that highlighted the dangers of unsupervised teen gatherings and the responsibility of adults to protect children. O’Connor will serve a significant portion of her sentence, with nine years credited for time already served.
