Los Angeles Tops Smoggiest City List Again

Los Angeles has been named the smoggiest city in the United States for the 25th time in 26 years, according to the American Lung Association’s annual “State of the Air” report released on Wednesday (April 23). Despite significant improvements, the city continues to struggle with air quality issues.

The report highlights that the number of unhealthy ozone days in Los Angeles has decreased by nearly 40% since 2000. However, the city remains at the top of the list for ozone pollution and ranks seventh for particle pollution. This persistent issue underscores the challenges Los Angeles faces in combating air pollution.

According to the American Lung Association, California’s clean air policies have contributed to reductions in ozone and particle pollution. Yet, over 34.3 million Californians live in areas with at least one failing grade for air quality, and 22.9 million live in areas with three failing grades.

The report calls for increased efforts to tackle air pollution, especially in light of federal proposals to reduce clean air protections. Mariela Ruacho, Senior Manager for Clean Air Advocacy with the American Lung Association, emphasized the need for local and state agencies to utilize all available resources to protect public health.

Despite the challenges, some California cities, including Los Angeles, have achieved their cleanest air quality reports in history for certain pollutants. This progress reflects the effectiveness of ongoing clean air initiatives.
