Los Angeles Nears $1B in Liability Claims Since 2020

The city of Los Angeles has paid nearly $1 billion in liability claims since 2020, according to a new report. City Controller Kenneth Mejia unveiled the Liability Claims Dashboard on Monday (June 30), revealing that $940.1 million has been paid out since the start of fiscal year 2020. This figure only includes data up to March of this year, with the remaining months expected to push the total past $1 billion.

The dashboard provides a detailed breakdown of payouts by department and category. The Los Angeles Police Department leads all city departments with more than $345 million in payouts. Street Services follows with over $164 million. The largest category of claims is “dangerous condition,” which includes issues like downed trees and damaged roadways, totaling nearly $298 million. Civil rights violations and excessive force claims account for over $173 million in payouts.

The Liability Claims Dashboard aims to increase transparency by offering an interactive analysis of liability payouts from fiscal year 2020 to 2025. It allows users to view the distribution of claims across city departments and other relevant data. The dashboard is expected to be updated with the fourth-quarter figures soon, which could add another $70 million to the total, pushing it over the $1 billion mark.

KTLA reports that the dashboard also highlights the mean payout per claim and the number of claims processed. As the city continues to address these financial liabilities, the dashboard serves as a tool for both officials and the public to better understand the scope and impact of these claims.
