Los Angeles Cat Café Robbed, Nonprofit Urges Community Support

The CatCafe Lounge, a nonprofit cat café in Los Angeles, was targeted by thieves last weekend, leading to damage and the theft of security equipment. The café, which focuses on rescuing and placing cats in adoptive homes, reported that the incident occurred between noon and 1 p.m. The suspects may have been guests who interacted with the cats before allegedly stealing a motion detector. This detector was installed after a 2022 burglary when the café lost electronics and cash.

The theft damaged the ceiling and removed part of the security system, which the café says is crucial for ensuring the safety of its animals. The organization expressed concern over the motivation behind targeting security equipment, questioning whether it was a form of canvassing. A representative told KTLA, “It makes us question whether this could have been canvassing, which is what troubles us most.”

CatCafe Lounge is the only nonprofit cat café in Los Angeles, with a mission to reduce euthanizations by increasing adoptions while socializing cats. Every dollar spent on repairs takes away from resources meant for the cats’ care, including food and litter. The café is encouraging the community to donate to help cover costs and support ongoing operations. In a post shared on Instagram, the organization wrote, “Someone ripped out our security equipment, damaged the ceiling, and stole from our nonprofit — and from the cats.”

The café is asking anyone with information about the theft to contact the Los Angeles Police Department. The damage caused by the theft amounts to $250. The café emphasizes that every contribution helps create a safe and enriching environment for the animals and assists in connecting potential adopters with the 20 to 30 cats available for adoption at any given time.
