Librarians across Los Angeles are increasingly expressing concerns about their safety due to rising incidents of violence, drug use, and mental health emergencies in public libraries. On August 9, 2023, a library employee at the Ocean Park Branch in Santa Monica found a homeless man with severe injuries, prompting a police response. The man, who had suffered blunt force trauma, was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. The suspect, also homeless, was later arrested and charged with attempted murder and felony battery on a police officer.
This incident is part of a larger pattern of violence and disturbances in libraries throughout Los Angeles. According to a review by the Westside Current, LAPD officers responded to over 900 calls from 25 library branches last year, many involving unhoused individuals. Common issues include violence, drug use, and trespassing. For instance, the West Los Angeles Branch alone accounted for 98 emergency calls over two years, involving violent disturbances, drug-related activities, and other serious incidents.
Librarians are feeling overwhelmed and fearful. Susan, a librarian who requested anonymity, described frequent disruptions, including patrons using drugs and leaving behind hazardous waste. “It’s constant,” she said, expressing concern over the lack of protection for library staff.
During a City Council meeting in October 2024, library workers called for better training, increased security, and a comprehensive safety plan. Councilmember Traci Park introduced a motion to enhance safety measures across library branches, emphasizing their role as vital educational and community centers. The motion has passed the Public Safety Committee and awaits a council vote.
In Santa Monica, similar challenges persist. John Alle, a local businessman, reported ongoing safety hazards at libraries, highlighting inadequate funding for security and staffing. As librarians continue to navigate these challenges, there is a growing call for action to ensure libraries remain safe and welcoming spaces for all.
