LBPD: Man Arrested in `Multiple Sex Crime Incidents’; Other Victims Sought

LONG BEACH (CNS) – A Long Beach man was arrested on suspicion of “multiple sex crime incidents,” at least one of which was more than 10 years ago, and detectives urged other possible victims to contact them.

Melvin Johnson Jr., 34, was arrested Oct. 30 and booked on suspicion of numerous crimes, including: forcible lewd act on a child under age 14, forcible rape, forcible oral copulation and possession of a firearm by a felon, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

Bail was set at $3.5 million, according to the LBPD.

“Sex Crimes detectives have arrested a suspect for multiple sex crime incidents between April 2014 and October 2024, and believe there may be additional victims,” an LBPD statement said.

Police allege that Johnson is responsible for the following crimes:

— in April of 2014 at Paramount Boulevard and South Street, forcible lewd act on a child under age 14, against a female minor;

— in May of 2024 at Long Beach Boulevard and Wardlow Road, various sexual assaults against a female adult;

— in July of 2024 at Long Beach Boulevard and San Antonio Drive, sexual assault with intent to commit a felony, victim under age 18, against a female minor;

— in October of 2024 at Orange Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, sexual assault with intent to commit a felony, against a female adult; and

— in October of 2024 at Pacific Coast Highway and Pacific Avenue, possession of a firearm by a felon.

As a result of their investigation, detectives determined Johnson used a firearm in the commission of the crime in several of the incidents, according to the LBPD.

“Additionally, Johnson is a person of interest in multiple additional sexual assault cases in Los Angeles (County) Sheriff’s Department jurisdiction and the state of Nevada,” according to the LBPD statement.

Detectives believe there may be additional unreported incidents and encourage any possible victims to contact Sex Crimes Detail at 562-570-7368. Anonymous tips may be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS, or at www.lacrimestoppers.org.
