LAUSD Seeks Limits on Immigration Enforcement Near Schools

As students returned to classrooms in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) on Thursday, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho called for restrictions on immigration enforcement near schools. He emphasized that schools should remain safe spaces for students, regardless of their immigration status. The district has been proactive in creating a supportive environment amid ongoing immigration raids that have heightened fears among families.

Superintendent Carvalho has urged immigration authorities to avoid enforcement activity within a two-block radius of schools, starting an hour before classes begin and ending an hour after they conclude. He stated, “Hungry children, children in fear, cannot learn well,” highlighting the impact of such actions on students’ ability to focus on their education. LAUSD is implementing measures like altering bus routes to accommodate students from immigrant families and distributing family preparedness packets with know-your-rights information and emergency contact updates.

The district, which serves over 500,000 students, has partnered with local law enforcement to form a “rapid response” network to alert schools of nearby enforcement actions. According to CNN, the district has seen a rise in virtual enrollment as some families opt for online learning due to fears of immigration raids.

Recent incidents, such as the detention of a 15-year-old boy with disabilities outside Arleta High School, have intensified concerns. The Los Angeles Times reported that federal agents mistakenly targeted the boy, causing distress in the community. Despite these challenges, LAUSD remains committed to protecting students and ensuring they receive an uninterrupted education.
