LA’s First Community Solar Project Powers Up, Saves Money

Los Angeles has launched its first “community solar” project, marking a significant step forward in clean energy for urban areas. Located on the roofs of two Extra Space storage buildings in Pico Rivera, the solar panels are now operational and benefiting nearly 400 low-income households in the Bassett and Avocado Heights neighborhoods of the southeast San Gabriel Valley. These families receive a 20% discount on their electricity bills, thanks to their subscription to the project.

The initiative aims to provide a sustainable and cost-effective energy solution for urban communities. By using existing infrastructure, such as the rooftops of storage buildings, the project demonstrates a scalable model for other cities looking to implement similar clean energy solutions. The project came online in February and is seen as a potential blueprint for expanding community solar efforts across California.

Community solar projects like this one are designed to make renewable energy accessible to those who might not have the means to install solar panels on their own homes. By subscribing to a shared solar array, residents can enjoy the benefits of solar power without the upfront costs and maintenance responsibilities.
